The arrangement of this well known hymn, « Abide With Me, » was created for Orchestra Kingston and the Kingston Choral Society for their joint performances on Remembrance Day. The work is arranged so that any three verses of the hymn can be performed in congregational style; allowing for inclusion of the audience in its performance if so desired. The author of the hymn, Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847), was a Scottish Anglican minister who suffered from poor health and would regularly travel abroad for relief, as was customary at that time. He wrote the hymn near his death while in Italy to provide comfort to himself and others. Its first performance was at his funeral in 1847. Lyte did write a melody for its performance but it has been traditionally set to the melody, « Eventide, » written by the organist William Henry Monk (1823-1889).
