Chansons de Gestes (Songs of Heroic Deeds, in Old French) were epic tales from medieval France, lauding the mythical and partially historical exploits of brave knights questing for glory and honor in both love and war. The more familiar Arthurian legends of Sir Gawain, Lancelot and Guinevere, and Percival come from the same environment; this composition was inspired from the combined mythologies. This composition is a lyrical study on the contradictory yet thrillingly complementary concept of fin amour, between the passionate and sensual desires of lovers and how such feelings transcend the world. This work was commissioned by Marjolaine Lambert, and premiered in April 2012 at Trinity Wall Street, New York City. In 2019, I incorporated it within my Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry for Trombone and Strings, as a prelude to a setting of World War I Corporal Adelard Audet’s poem, « No Man’s Land, » where it was performed by Marianne di Tomaso.
