Summer Breezes
for Octet
« Written as a part of the Suite (companion pieces are Wild Rice and Lily Pads) that was commissioned by Alberta painter Ted Godwin. The artist loaned the original pieces to the composer for a period of time and Bob used the lines and shapes of the paintings as inspiration for the pieces he wrote.
This is a 12 tone row, a compositional device that using all twelve semitones and demonstrates Bob’s uncanny ability to make an intellectual musical exercise still sound romantic. It is also very fun to play, with a challenging descending line and riveting B section. »
