Based on three different Scottish dance forms, this work explores Celtic music using
authentic dance tunes and original material. The first movement, Reel, uses the tune On
the Road to Linton. The melody is modified in places, but it is the surrounding material
that is constantly developed in this presentation of this well-known reel.

The second movement, Air, is based on the Gaelic air, My Mind is Troubled, a slow tune
in 3/4 time. The melodic material is spread around the quintet and utilizes mutes in places
to present a contrasting setting.

The final movement, Jig, is a lively dance in 6/8 and is probably the most well known
form of Celtic music. An important feature of this musical tradition is to present dances
in sets or medleys. This usually entails using three different jigs or reels in a set. In this
instance Jig consists of the following tunes, Highlander’s Jig, Stool of Repentance, and
Farewell to the Tay. The movement concludes with a return to Highlander’s Jig.

All three of these movements can be performed individually or together at the discretion
of the performers. The last movement would be interesting as a concert finale or encore.
