Postcards from Prince Edward Island is based on one Irish and three different Scottish Dance tunes that are popular among Prince Edward Island fiddlers. The first movement features the reel Muilean Dubh (Black Mill) a very popular and lively tune. The reel itself never changes but the material around it is varied in a number of ways. The second movement uses the air Hector the Hero. This is a bagpipe lament written by James Scott Skinner in 1903. The melody is presented in two contrasting settings featuring various sections of the orchestra. The work concludes in much the same manner as it began featuring a solo violin. The last movement references two different jigs, Jerry’s Beaver Hat and Morrison’s Jig. The musical materials these two tunes present is explored featuring the various sections of the orchestra with material derived from the original melodies. While presented as a set, much in the fiddling tradition of presenting this music in a medley of tunes, all three of these movements can be performed alone.
