This piece was inspired by a movement from my orchestral piece, « Suite for Grief », a piece in which I began to explore the various stages & aspects of grief that we move through, when we face irretrievable loss. Though the journey of grief isn’t linear in nature, it is, in whatever pattern, progressive over time. Bargaining evokes our need to rationalize & negotiate loss, the frantic way we propose alternatives and attempt to power through the loss we cannot reverse. Eventually, the futility of our frenzy becomes clear, and we grow tired. In the stillness and coming undone, we are left to recognize and to mourn deeply. Confronting dissolves into disorientation, exploration, recognition, surrender. In this revisioning, I endeavoured to trace these emotions using the pallet of string quintet & harp.
