Drifter (2009) was composed originally for electric guitar and acoustic piano (commissioned by Tim Brady and Brigitte Poulin in Montreal), but it can also be performed on classical guitar with piano. This combination of instruments is challenging – what to do with their differences, where do they meet? Throughout, I was looking for a sense of gently undulating rhythm, a kind of slightly unhurried flow. I like the feeling of the two instruments shadowing each other, the slightly different colours enveloping the line of melody or chords. For me, Drifter is like a state of being: gazing into the distance, observing small details – like being deep in thought.
