I wrote this piece thinking about the deceptively elegant simplicity of Mondrian’s paintings, in which each line, each block of colour is precisely placed and has a particular weight. As I wrote, I also ruminated on the “blank” white spaces in his works; rests form an important part of the musical rhetoric of my piece, as well.
Each movement reflects, in part, on some of the extra-musical and musical associations with the colour for which it is named: Rouge is passionate, Bleu melancholic (with allusions to the blues scale), Jaune energetic but also cautioning.

Cette piece tire son inspiration de l’ensemble des toiles du peintre néerlandais Piet Mondrian. En particular, une sorte de simplicité d’une élégance trompeuse dans laquelle chaque ligne, chaque couleur doit être au bon endroit. Chacune des colours portant le titre des trois movements tient des associations à des affects particuliers – respectivement las passion (mais aussi la colère) pour le rouge, la tristesse et la douceur avec le bleu, puis le jaune représentant l’énergie vivifiante.
