Aviva Swims
for SSAA and accompaniment
A first impression is powerful – it sticks with us and is the thing that is compared to
every next encounter.
After watching my young child meet new people in certain circumstances, and then
re-meet them in a new place, I wrote this text. This setting of the text for treble choir
plays with slight variations and transpositions to suit shifting reflections of Aviva.
Aviva swims.
Aviva will always be swimming.
T his is the first impression, the mold that will
be gently broken with each new meeting,
each new set of earrings.
Aviva waits, Aviva cries, Aviva smiles.
How do you know Aviva?
Performance Note
The majority of the piece is notated in 3/4, but there are moments when the
conductor may want to conduct in a 6/8 duple feel, or even a feeling of one big beat
per bar.
« Aviva » pronounciation: « Ah-vee-vah ». Do not start with a hard glottal ‘A’, instead
with a softer attack, especially when the name is repeated.
