Folie à Deux is a set of variations based upon the Renaissance folk melody La Folía, a popular source material for composers of the Baroque period. This simple 16-bar melody gave me the opportunity to create an intersection between the modern and the archaic, juxtaposing the contemporary sound of the saxophone with the historic timbre of the harpsichord. The traditional melody and harmony are treated with a variety of post- minimalist textures and rhythms.
