This 10-movement song-cycle is set to the texts of Western Philosophers and Ancient Sanskrit poets. The words are inspirational poems about life. The music is written based on the ragas found in programme notes of the late sitarist, Ravi Shankar, « A Salutation to Life » begins and ends with movements for soprano, sitar and tambura. Movements 2 through 9 are for soprano and piano i.e. without sitar, and can also be performed as a set. « A Salutation to Life » received a 2nd place award after Udo Kasamets in 1982’s « East Meets West » Composers’ Competition held by the Raga-mala Society of Calgary.
