Flamenco music is native to the Andalusian, or southern, region of Spain and is derived from a mixture of the Gypsy, Jewish, Arabic, and Byzantine cultures. Usually, a Flamenco Dance is accompanied by guitar and voice embellished with castanets and hand clapping, but there are many arrangements for larger ensemble including full orchestra as was done by such composers as Albeniz, Rodrigo, and de Falla. The music in Flamenco Dance is taken from two scenes from my ballet, Carmen, the Passion, which was commissioned and performed by the Winnipeg Ballet in 2007. The first section is from a scene in which Escamillo tries to impress Carmen by dancing to the clapping of bystanders, (simulated in the percussion section by two whips). In this scene, Carmen rejects Escamillo, but the second part of Flamenco Dance takes music where she has changed her mind and they dance passionately together.
