Over the last fifteen years, Victor Herbiet has composed works in various styles to add new and innovative selections to the classical saxophone repertoire. Whether he draws inspiration from the Argentinian tango, ragtime, French Impressionism, serialism or electronic music, he strives to infuse flow and energy in every piece he creates. The recording is titled The Road to the Ethereal Gate because it features compositions for saxophone and various instruments that led Victor to the creation of Through the Ethereal Gate for solo saxophonist-thereminist. This piece is unique because it features a new playing system where the saxophonist can generate notes and effects from a theremin while playing the saxophone. For the composer, the “Ethereal Gate” is the invisible barrier in thin air that separates the area where the theremin is inactive from the one where the theremin recognizes someone’s presence. When the saxophonist crosses this barrier for the first time, a new universe of soundscapes suddenly becomes possible. After travelling to, and through the ethereal gate, we discover what lies beyond as we find ourselves standing On the Shores of Eternity.

Victor Herbiet studied saxophone with Peter Smith and Noël Samyn and composition with Steven Gellman at the University of Ottawa where he obtained a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in saxophone performance. After serving with the Canadian Forces Music Branch between 1999 and 2011, Victor reoriented his career towards solo performance, education and composition. By blending the idioms of twelve-tone music with other styles such as French impressionism, Canadian folk, American jazz and Latin music, Victor has created a musical language that is accessible and interesting for diverse audiences. Victor is currently adjunct professor at the School of Music of the University of Ottawa and publishes his compositions through Gérard Billaudot, Dorn Publications and the Canadian Music Centre. This recording also features contributions from Frédéric Lacroix (piano), Kimball Sykes (clarinet), and Marc Djokic (violin).

Depuis une quinzaine d’années, Victor Herbiet a composé des oeuvres de styles variés pour ajouter de nouvelles possibilités innovantes au répertoire du saxophone classique. Il s’inspire du tango argentin, du ragtime, de l’impressionnisme français, du sérialisme et de la musique électronique pour créer des oeuvres cohésives et énergiques. Cet enregistrement est intitulé Vers la porte éthérique parce qu’on y trouve les compositions qui ont menées Victor Herbiet à la création de Through the Ethereal Gate pour saxophoniste-théréministe solo. Cette composition est unique car elle emploie une nouvelle technique d’interprétation où le (la) saxophoniste créé des notes et des effets au thérémine pendant qu’il (elle) joue du saxophone. Ce que le compositeur entend par porte éthérique c’est la barrière invisible dans l’air qui sépare l’espace ou le thérémine est inactif de l’espace où il commence à détecter la présence d’une personne. Quand le (la) saxophoniste franchit le seuil de la porte éthérique pour la première fois, un nouvel univers de sonorités devient soudainement possible. Après avoir passé de l’autre côté de la porte éthérique, on découvre ce qui se trouve au-delà, sur les rives de l’éternité.

Victor Herbiet a étudié le saxophone avec Peter Smith et Noël Samyn et la composition avec Steven Gellman à l’Université d’Ottawa où il a obtenu un baccalauréat et une maîtrise en interprétation. Après avoir servi la Branche des services de musique des Forces canadiennes de 1999 à 2011, Victor a réorienté sa carrière pour mettre l’emphase sur ses prestations comme soliste, l’éducation et la composition. En fusionnant la musique dodécaphonique avec d’autres styles tels que l’impressionnisme français, le folk canadien, le jazz américain et la musique latine, Victor a créé un langage musical accessible et capable d’intéresser des publics variés. Victor est professeur auxiliaire à l’Université d’Ottawa et publie ses compositions chez Gérard Billaudot, chez Dorn Publications et au Centre de Musique Canadienne. Cet enregistrement voit également la participation de Frédéric Lacroix (piano), Kimball Sykes (clarinette) et Marc Djokic (violon).
