Polys Tonos (πολύς “much”, “many”, τόνος “accent”) – commissioned by Julia Nolan for the World Saxophone Congress 2012. Playing on the false cognate of “polytonal”, this work fluctuates harmonically through major and minor modes while exploring the “many accents” of polyrhythmic layering. A simple scalar process worked out in the piano is elaborated by the saxophone in increasingly complex variations.
