This Design comprises 13 sections varying by instrumentation. Flute and Bassoon appear in all sections. The eight possible combinations of the other three instruments each appear in one or two sections, beginning with none and ending with all three. The opening motif D-Eb-C-B figures prominently throughout in various transpositions, inversions, etc. In particular, it is the basis of the subject of the piece’s closing fughetta. After completing the main work of composition, the composer added the subtitle, “Walking Moods”, as perhaps a guide to interpretation.
