The first movement of this work is a series of genre variations on the Afro-American spiritual of the same name, and the second is a transcription of an Indonesian folk melody, the piano part being generated solely by the notes available in the melody. “Deux Plaisanteris” for Saxophone (Alto, Eb) and Piano received a grant from the Minnesota Composer’s Forum for a studio recording. It was recorded by Taimur Sullivan (Eb Alto Saxophone) and Alissa Rhode (Piano) at Foellinger Great Hall, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, Urbana, Illinois, USA, November 1, 1991.
