The Concerto for Flute and Orchestra is only the second work by Schafer to use the title « concerto ». Both the Flute Concerto and the subsequent Harp Concerto are sincere and substantial compositions, written to display the talents of flutist Robert Aitken and harpist Judy Loman, respectively.

Schafer has summarized The Darkly Splendid Earth: The Lonely Traveller as a double rhapsody for violin and orchestra, an image of a balancing act between the individual and the earth, touching one another, interacting, but without imposing or endorsing anything except that which springs from within.
