Formed in 1983 by composer Jon Siddall, the Evergreen Club Gamelan Ensemble has performed numerous world premieres of works by many leading contemporary composers in addition to its presentation of traditional Sundanese music. Based in Toronto, the Evergreen Club is Canada’s first professional gamelan and has toured extensively in Canada and Europe.

This recording reflects the Evergreen Club’s dedication to the development and commissioning of contemporary Canadian music combined with the study and performance of Indonesian music in a style respectful of the Sundanese tradition.

Each composition here represents a decisive element of contemporary music in combination with several contrasting cultural influences. Many explore a hybrid union between the classic qualities of Sundanese gamelan degung together with other musical forms and instruments that are not traditional to either gamelan or contemporary music.
