« The Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance (Lamp) is very proud to announce that in September 2022 Matthias McIntire joined us as our Composer-in-Residence. Matthias first came to Lamp as a participant in the 2018 Composition Academy where he impressed Artistic Director Burt Wathen with his fascinating and innovative music. As one of the most exciting new voices on the Canadian music scene, Matthias has been selected to return for a 10-month residency.

Throughout this residency, Matthias will work alongside leading figures in the industry, including other composers and chamber musicians. Matthias is currently working on a new piece for Lamp’s Quartet-in-Residence, the acclaimed Verona Quartet, in honour of the centennial year of Hungarian composer György Ligeti’s birth. The world premiere of this new work will be presented in the Lamp recital hall as part of the NOW Festival of contemporary music in June. Matthias is also working on a composition that juxtaposes Cape Breton fiddle and Brazilian Choro music as a metaphor for his cross-cultural marriage. Having been to Cape Breton this fall to participate in a fiddle workshop, Matthias and his wife Laura will travel to her homeland Brazil in December to visit family and to continue his research.
