In writing this piece, I was compelled to explore the 2019 fire that affected Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The idea of fire and rebirth is compelling, bringing Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh’s saying “No Mud, No Lotus” to mind. To make this inspiration tangible, I reuse materials from the Kyrie of Guillaume de Machaut’s Messe Notre Dame. Rather than direct quotation, I have re-imagined timbres from Guillaume de Machaut’s Messe Notre Dame to make something new and secular that reflects on the ideas of fire and rebirth. The work calls for 4 spatialized electric guitars with loopers and other electronic effects, and unfolds slowly over a duration if 14 minutes divided into 7 sections. Commissioned by Bradyworks.
