The first of these short, accessible Inventions was written in 2011, and the other two later as companion pieces. They may be performed individually or as a suite. Although inspired by the counterpoint of J.S. Bach, each explores harmonic territory that might have given his contemporaries pause. The second (Pesante) perhaps departs farthest from Bach’s model: contrapuntal melodic lines are thickened by means of planing, and the second half dissolves into a haze of incommensurate rhythms
