Tradition and Disruption explores some of the opposing and conflicting forces behind the creation of piano music in the classical European tradition from the 17th to the 21st centuries. Through their works, every composer on this program portrays the co-existence of multiple cultural, national, stylistic and geographic elements. In some cases, as with Bach, Tajčević, Chopin or Liszt, this contrast integrates smoothly with traditional forms and modes of expression; in others, as in the case of Rachmaninov, Maksimović and Sokolović, the disruptive elements strive to break loose from the confines of centuries’ old tradition.

In his personal and expressive performing style, Canadian-Serbian pianist Viktor Lazarov brings to you a recital of his favourite styles: Baroque, Romantic and Contemporary. In his original programmes, Lazarov continues to champion the music inspired by Balkan themes, such as the works of composers Marko Tajčević, Svetlana Maksimović and Ana Sokolović.
