CMC Associate Composer Samy Moussa wins
Composition of the Year with works also featured on two additional JUNO winning albums.

Canadian classical music shines within JUNO Awards

The Canadian Music Centre (CMC) is thrilled to announce that several CMC Associate Composers have won and/or contributed to 2021 JUNO Award winning albums. We congratulate Associate Composer Samy Moussa on winning the 2021 JUNO Award for Composition of the Year with his work Violin Concerto ‘Adrano’, recorded by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal led by Maestro Kent Nagano and featuring violinist Andrew Wan. The composition is also featured on the album “Ginastera – Bernstein – Moussa: Oeuvres pour violon et orchestre” by the afore mentioned artists, winning the 2021 JUNO Award for Classical Album of the Year: Large Ensemble.

Winning the 2021 JUNO Award for Classical Album of the Year: Solo or Chamber is Mosaïque by Ensemble Made in Canada, which features the compositions of CMC Associate Composers Vivian Fung, Nicolas Gilbert, Kevin Lau, Nicole Lizée, Richard Mascall, Samy Moussa, William Rowson, and Ana Sokolović. This album also features Canadian composers David Braid, Barbara Croall, Julie Doiron, Andrew Downing, Darren Sigesmund and Sarah Slean.

The CMC would also like to congratulate Canadian artists Erin Wall, Joshua Hopkins, The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, and Toronto Symphony Orchestra on winning the 2021 JUNO Award for Classical Album of the Year: Choral or Vocal for their album “Massenet: Thaïs”.

We congratulate this year’s nominees, winners, and performers and would like to thank all Canadian musical artists providing creative contributions to connect us all, especially over this past year.

About the Composer

Samy Moussa is a Canadian composer and conductor, born in Montréal in 1984. He was awarded a year fellowship at the German Academy in Rome « Villa Massimo » (2018-19), the Hindemith Prize (2017) and the Composer’s Prize from the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation (2013).

He has conducted the Bavarian State Opera Orchestra and Chorus, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, the Québec Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Halle and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra among others.

Samy Moussa is currently composing a work for the Vienna Philharmonic and Christian Thielemann. His music for orchestra has been championed by world renowned conductors such as Christoph Eschenbach, Hannu Lintu, Stéphane Denève and Kent Nagano who has commissioned him six orchestral works for the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Past performers include the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Brussels Philharmonic and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
